Seafarer FAQ: Contracts, Salaries, Training & Life Onboard

CONTRACTS & COMPENSATION

Crossworld contracts typically run between 4 and 9 months depending on rank and vessel type. Ratings on bulk carriers may serve up to 9 months, while senior officers often sign 4 to 6 month contracts. Your specific contract length will be stated in writing before you sign.

Salaries at Crossworld follow international maritime standards and are confirmed in writing before contract signing. As a reference baseline, the table in Section 2 shows ILO/ITF minimum monthly rates as of January 2025. These are industry minimums — Crossworld's actual offers are subject to vessel type, trading area and applicable CBA or collective agreement.

Yes. Crossworld covers approved travel to and from the vessel, visa processing fees, and the mandatory Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME). Onboard insurance is provided through P&I cover.

Standard contracts pay during onboard service only. Senior officers on long-term arrangements may be eligible for standby pay or retention bonuses during leave periods.

Yes. All overtime worked above the minimum rest hours required by MLC 2006 is logged and compensated in accordance with your contract and applicable CBA terms.

Medical or family emergency repatriation is fully covered by Crossworld. Voluntary early resignation without a valid reason may result in recovery of certain onboarding and travel costs as outlined in your contract.

CAREER PATH & TRAINING

You need a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, a Watch Rating Certificate, a minimum period of approved sea time, and completion of an Officer in Charge of a Navigational or Engineering Watch (OICNW / OICEW) course at an IMO and MARINA-approved institution.

Both paths offer advancement, though the timeline differs. Deck officers often advance more quickly due to sustained demand for bridge watch officers. Engine officers may take longer to reach senior rank but often have broader options for shore-based technical careers.

Crossworld supports STCW renewal and specialist training — including LNG, DP and Bridge Simulator — for returning crew in good standing.

Yes. Many of Crossworld's training officers, superintendents and recruitment staff are former seafarers. Internal opportunities are available to experienced crew following a successful internal application.

VESSEL ASSIGNMENTS & LIFE ONBOARD

Assignments are matched based on your rank, certifications, vessel type experience, and current fleet availability. Crossworld aims to place seafarers on vessel types they are familiar with. Principal preferences are also considered.

Modern vessels in the Crossworld managed fleet provide single-occupancy or shared cabins, mess hall and recreation facilities, gym access on larger ships, and satellite internet on equipped vessels. All conditions meet or exceed MLC 2006 standards.

The working language on all Crossworld-managed vessels is English. Crews are multicultural. Crossworld promotes respectful and clear communication across all nationalities.

You have access to 24/7 telemedical support. If your condition requires it, you will be repatriated for treatment at no cost to you. All medical costs related to onboard illness or injury are covered through P&I insurance. Psychological support is also available through Crossworld's partner networks.

Many vessels in the Crossworld managed fleet are equipped with VSAT satellite internet. Connectivity is available to crew for personal use, though data allowances and coverage vary by vessel and route.

WELLBEING & WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Watchkeepers typically follow an 8-hour rotation. Day workers follow a 12-hour schedule. All hours are logged. Rest period requirements under MLC 2006 are strictly observed, and all overtime above contracted hours is compensated.

Yes. Crossworld provides access to confidential counselling services, resilience training programmes, and encourages regular contact with family via onboard communication systems.

Shore leave is granted subject to port and vessel operational requirements and any applicable ISPS or local health restrictions. Crossworld actively advocates for crew rest and recreation during port stays wherever permitted.

Meals onboard are provided and meet nutritional standards. Larger vessels have gym or fitness equipment. Monthly wellness check-ins are conducted. Pre-joining health seminars and post-contract health screening are also offered.

JOINING PROCESS & POLICIES

After selection, the process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks and includes document verification, PEME medical examination, visa and flag endorsement processing, a contract briefing, and travel arrangement. All travel and medical costs are covered by Crossworld.

You will need: a valid seaman's book, a passport valid for at least 12 months beyond your contract end date, STCW Basic Safety Training certificates, sea service records, a current medical fitness certificate, and any relevant flag state endorsements.

Crossworld operates a referral programme for crew. Details including eligibility and bonus amounts are confirmed at the time of contract.

Crossworld has over 45 years of maritime heritage, dating to 1979. We currently manage crew for 397 vessels and maintain a pool of over 11,000 active seafarers. We hold POEA Best Performing Manning Agent recognition and operate from offices in Athens, Manila, Limassol and beyond.

PEME stands for Pre-Employment Medical Examination. It is mandatory before joining any vessel. Typical tests include a blood panel, chest X-ray, urine test, eyesight check, ECG and general physical examination. To prepare: avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the exam, sleep well the night before, and bring all required medical documents. The cost of PEME is fully covered by Crossworld.

Salaries are paid in USD. Filipino seafarers may be eligible for income tax exemptions under Philippine law — we recommend consulting your local tax authority or a maritime-specialised accountant for guidance.
